Decentraland has been hacked, and the MANA airdrop has been extorted, but what does this mean for the future of MANA price and the airdrop?

Decentraland has been hacked, and the MANA airdrop has been extorted, but what does this mean for the future of MANA price and the airdrop?

Blockchain security firm PeckShield sounded the alarm today over a hack on Decentraland X’s official account.

Scammers could slip fake MANA airdrop links to unsuspecting followers, baiting them into wallet connections and pilfering their crypto stashes.

“The blockchain security firm has advised users to refrain from interacting with the official Decentraland account by not clicking the link or engaging with related content.” – PeckShield

This sucks. You don’t want to see any start of the bull run go like this.

The Phishing Trap: A False Airdrop

Decentraland is an online video game released to the public in 2020 that brings together games like Second Life, Roblox and Minecraft, and pairs them together with blockchain.

It’s the first step towards Ernest Cline’s “Ready Player One;” an online experience where you can explore a digitized second life with friends and strangers.

This marks one of the first severe hacks to Decentraland. So far the Twitter account is still compromised.

Exploiting the trust of well-known platforms, these scammers played a sly hand.

By muting comments on their post and claiming it was for user protection against “malicious links,” they ironically lent their scam an air of legitimacy.

Despite the drama, MANA price remains resilient as it continues to form a double-bottomed support on the long-time frame – positioning it for a potential breakout in Q4.

PeckShield’s Advice and the Growing Trend

PeckShield advises users to pause any dealings with Decentraland’s account until security is confirmed. This breach is part of a troubling trend of social media scams spiraling out of control.

In response, Twitter user Kitboga, known for calling out scams before they happen, stresses the importance of skepticism, especially when urgency is involved.

“The one common thing every scammer does is ‘give you a sense of urgency,’ which should be responded to with calm consideration to avoid becoming a victim.”

By staying calm and critically evaluating any suspicious activity, users can protect themselves from falling prey to scams.

While Decentraland hasn’t captured its 2021 hype, it has a good framework as a GameFi project. It lacks polish but has charm. It’s not original, but has attracted a growing user base. It’s the first and most popular of its kind, and in the cryptocurrency space, that’s always a huge benefit.

This hack, however, could set the game back in terms of trusting their social media presence.
